"Working with Young Language Learners"

This poster is based on the First Chapter "Working with Young Language Learners" of the book Teaching English in the Primary Classroom by Susan Halliwell. We mentioned the main characteristics of children as language learners and we insisted that games, imagination and eagerness to talk are very powerful contribution to learning.
Imagination is an authentic part of being a child and so, children imagine how the world is in different ways. Those characteristics emerge students´personalities and engage children to make the language their own, living the language for real. How we put in the poster, "The only way to learn to use the language is to use it". That´s why children need to talk.
The teacher´s role is also really important. She should use gestures, intonation, demonstration and facial expressions to teach and to improve children´s communication.

  1. It is known that children learn by doing, so as you say, we as teachers have to generate situations in which students have the need to communicate, and that will be provided by seting meaningful contexts and purposes, which will be different for each group of students.
